- Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 or 26.04, MySQL 8.0 or 8.4, a supported version of Node.js, NGINX (1.9.5 or newer for SSL), systemd, and a server with at least 1 GB of memory.
How to size a VPS for Ghost
Ghost's official guide for Ubuntu asks for a server with at least 1 GB of memory, running Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 or 26.04 with MySQL 8.0 or 8.4, a supported Node.js version, NGINX and systemd. It gives no CPU or disk figure.
1 GB works for a small blog, but MySQL 8 and Node.js share that memory, so 2 GB is the comfortable choice if you send newsletters or run other services on the same server (our estimate). Uploaded images are what fills the disk over time.
Self-hosting saves the Ghost(Pro) subscription but leaves you with updates, backups and newsletter email delivery.
Our recommendation: 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM, so MySQL 8 and Node.js have headroom, with 25 GB or more of SSD.
