How to size a VPS for self-hosted GitLab

GitLab is one of the heaviest self-hosted apps. Its installation requirements set a single-server baseline of 8 vCPU and 16 GB of RAM, and say GitLab can run with at least 8 GB in a memory-constrained environment. A separate GitLab guide goes as low as one core and 2 to 2.5 GB of RAM plus 1 GB of swap with features switched off, which suits experiments more than a team.

Budget 40 GB for GitLab itself, plus as much as all your repositories combined, plus 5 to 10 GB for PostgreSQL. GitLab recommends SSD storage and advises against burstable instance and disk types because their performance is inconsistent.

If you mainly need Git hosting and code review, Gitea or its fork Forgejo is far lighter: Gitea's docs say 2 CPU cores and 1 GB of RAM is typically sufficient for small teams.

Our recommendation: 8 vCPU and 16 GB RAM, GitLab's baseline for one server, with SSD storage for repositories. Gitea runs on 2 cores and 1 GB if you only need Git hosting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best VPS for self-hosted GitLab?

Among plans with at least 8 GB RAM, 4 vCPU and 40 GB storage, the best value right now is Contabo Cloud VPS 6 with 12 GB RAM and 6 vCPU for $7.20 a month. The cheapest plan that meets the minimum is Contabo at $5.28.

What VPS specs do I need for self-hosted GitLab?

We list plans with at least 8 GB RAM, 4 vCPU and 40 GB storage. The 8 GB RAM and 40 GB storage minimums are GitLab's official figures for a memory-constrained single server. GitLab's baseline is 8 vCPU; our 4 vCPU minimum is a middle ground between that and its 1-core minimal setup. We recommend 8 vCPU and 16 GB RAM, GitLab's baseline for one server, with SSD storage for repositories. Gitea runs on 2 cores and 1 GB if you only need Git hosting.

How much RAM does self-hosted GitLab need?

GitLab's baseline for one server is 16 GB of RAM with 8 vCPU. It can run with at least 8 GB in a memory-constrained environment, and a stripped-down setup works on 2.5 GB plus 1 GB of swap.

Is there a lighter alternative to GitLab?

Gitea, or its fork Forgejo. Gitea's docs say 2 CPU cores and 1 GB of RAM is typically sufficient for small teams and projects.

Can I run GitLab on a burstable VPS?

GitLab doesn't recommend burstable instance or disk types, because their performance is inconsistent. Pick a plan with steady CPU and disk performance if you can.
